Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He was 19 years old when he enlisted in the Union Army, being mustered in as a Private in Company H, 1st New York Volunteer Cavalry (known as the "Lincoln Cavalry") on September 7, 1864. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery in the cavalry engagement at Waynesboro, Virginia on March 2, 1865. His citation reads simply "Capture of flag and several prisoners". Awarded the Medal on March 26, 1865, he was one of thirteen soldiers to garner the CMOH for their bravery during the battle, which saw forces under General George A. Custer capture over 1,800 Confederate officers and men and 14 pieces of artillery. Private Carman served through the end of the war, and was honorably mustered out on June 6, 1865 at Alexandria, Virginia. After the war he was a printer in Rochester, New York. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
