S/O Dorsey Pentecost and Susan (Pierce) Ames. He married Josephine Horton in 1867 in Muscatine Co., Iowa and they had nine children: Silas Nelson, Augustus (Gus) A, George Byron, Albert B, Stella Gertrude, Charles Marion, Josephine (Josie), Grover Cleveland and Louis Napoleon Ames, the last three named, plus George Byron, dying in childhood. Of these nine children, only Silas Nelson Ames had offspring.

The following obit from the "Muscatine (Iowa) Journal", Tuesday, 6 November 1917, page 5 provided by "Stoneseeker" gives an overall view of Silas H. Ames' life.

PIONEER COUNTY RESIDENT DEAD
SILAS H. AMES DIES AT HOME DURING NIGHT
Was Well Known Throughout Entire State and Resident of Muscatine County for 67 Years

One of the city's pioneer residents, Silas Ames, passed away this morning shortly after 3 o'clock at his home, 312 East Ninth street. Pneumonia was given as the cause of his demise, he having suffered from that ailment since Friday of last week. He was 71 years of age and had been a resident of Muscatine county since 1850. Mr. Ames was well known throughout the entire state of Iowa, and owns considerable property in Muscatine county.
Silas H. Ames was born in Ohio March 10, 1846, and came to Muscatine county with his parents when four years of age, taking up residence on a farm near this city. Twenty years ago he retired from active service and has since made his home in this city.
In 1867 he was united in marriage with Miss Josephne Horton of this county, to which union nine children were born, four preceding the father in death. He leaves to mourn his loss besides his widow, five children; S. N. Ames and Augustus A Ames of Fort Madison, Drs. A. B. and C. M. Ames of Chicago and Miss Stella G. Ames at home. One sister in Oklahoma also survives.
Funeral services over the remains will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the family residence, the Rev. J. W. Graves of the First Baptist Church to be in charge of the services. Interment will be made in the Watkins Cemetery in Pike township.
