Dempsey was the s/o Nathaniel Smith who was b. 1781 in Va. and Charlotta White who was b. 1785 in N.C. Dempsey and Judith Prewitt were wed on Jan. 10, 1838 in Whitley County, Ky. Judith was the d/o John Prewitt and Judy DeMoss. The following children were born to Dempsey and Judith: Nathaniel James b. 1839, Mary "Polly" b. 1841, John b. 1843, Sarah "Sally" b. 1847, Lewis b. 1845, Jane b. 1849. After Judith's death in 1851, Dempsey married in 1852, (2nd) to Jane (Smith) Inman, widow of Thomas Inman. One child "Jane", was born to Dempsey and Jane "Smith" Inman Smith, according to the bio for Jane Smith Inman, who is buried beside her 1st husband, Thomas Inman.
Dempsey entered the Civil War in Co. E. 32 Ky. Inf. on Dec. 24, 1862. The large family farmed for many years, assumingly in the Red Bird area, in Whitley County.
Dempsey Smith was the father of my g-grandmother, Sarah "Sally" Smith, who married Milton E. Goins. They are buried at the this cemetery, also.
