For six seasons (1947 to 1952), he was a pitcher and played the outfield position with the New York Giants. Born Clinton Clarence Hartung, he attended Hondo High School (Texas), and was signed by the Giants as a free agent during the 1942 Amateur Draft. Following service in the US Army during World War II, he made his Major League debut on April 15, 1947, and pitched in 23 games, recording 9 wins. Also that season, he posted a .309 batting average while playing a few games in the outfield. During the 1951 season, Hartung had made the conversion to outfielder, concluding his pitching career as he amassed a record of 29 wins 29 losses, with a lifetime 5.02 ERA, in 112 games and 511 innings pitched. During Bobby Thomson's famed home run dubbed as "The Shot Heard 'Round the World", Hartung was pinch-running at third base for Don Mueller and scored ensuring the Giants the 1951 National League Pennant. During the 1951 World Series, he recorded 4 at bats in 2 games. He compiled 90 career hits, with a .238 batting average. After extending his career an additional 3 seasons in the Minor Leagues, he retired from baseball in 1955 and worked in the oil business. (bio by: C.S.)
