They made the trip with almost a dozen others from the Schurgast area. Others were Amelie "Mollie" Peisker and Wilhelm and Rosine Handke and their son Carl, from Nicholine, all of whom when to Kansas. They arrived in the Port of New York on 9 June, 1869. During the voyage an infant daughter died at sea.
The 1875 Kansas census reveals Ernst, age 46, a farmer, living in Wayne Township, Doniphan County, Kansas, with wife Anna, age 38, and six children, four born in Germany and two born in Kansas.
