ARTHUR FRANKLIN DARRAH
Arthur Franklin Darrah was born in Corning, Adams county, Iowa, on December 7, 1876, and departed this life at his home in Sidney, Fremont county, Iowa, on August 24, 1936, at the age of 59 years, 8 months and 17 days.
He as a member of a family of sixteen children, consisting of ten boys and six girls, and was the eighth son and thirteenth child born to Matthew and Jane Bryson Darrah.
The early years of his life were spent with his parents on the farm in Adams county. In 1895 his parents removed from the farm and took up residence in Corning. A couple of years later Frank came to Chariton, Iowa, to assist his brother, John H. Darrah, in the operation of a mercantile business which he had opened in 1896.
After a few years spent in the store in the capacity of a salesman, he secured a position as a traveling representative of a leading wholesale shoe manufacturing company of St. Louis. Later he represented several eastern shoe speciality lines, in which activity he was very successful.
Following his marriage in 1902 to Miss Jessie Myers, of Chariton, he gave up his traveling position and re-entered the retail mercantile business at Chariton, later forming a partnership with his brother in a store that was opened at Sidney under his management in 1911. The mercantile business there was liquidated in 1923, since which time he had been variously engaged in the sale of life insurance and as a representative of the P. H. Davis Tailoring Company.
In 1910 he united with the Presbyterian church at Chariton, Iowa, and in 1913 he transferred his membership to the First Presbyterian church of Sidney where he was a member of the board of trustees, and a faithful attendant at the hours of worship, and active in all church matters.
Frank Darrah, as he was familiarly called, has been a widely and favorably known personality in Sidney and Fremont county for a long period of years. As a citizen he was always willing to contribute his time and effort as well as whatever influence he possessed in behalf of every worthy cause for civic and community betterment.
Surviving him are his widow, Jessie Myers Darrah, one son, Warren Hilliard Darrah, of Tabor, and one daughter, Dorothy Muriel Darrah, of Sidney; also five brothers, Robert Darrah, of Chariton; Matthew Darrah and Charles Darrah, of Corning; John H. Darrah, of Kansas City, Mo.; and W. Ben Darrah, of Coffeyville, Kansas; and four sisters, Mrs. Sarah Haggerty and Mrs. Margaret Biggar, of Corning; Mrs. Mary Mitchell, of Omaha, Nebr.; and Mrs. Minnie B. Phillips, of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.
Four brothers, James, Carl, Samuel and Daniel, and two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Akin, of Alameda, Calif.; and Mrs. Nancy Arthur, of Corning, together with his parents, have preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church in Sidney Tuesday afternoon and at the Beardsley Funeral Home in Chariton this forenoon at ten o'clock, conducted by the Rev. Reynold Q. Ludy, pastor of the Sidney church, and burial was in the Chariton cemetery.
