Daniel was born in Neuburg am Rhein, Bavaria (now Rheinland-Pfalz), the son of Daniel & Barbara (Nill) Zimmermann. In 1857, he immigrated to the United States, eventually settling in Plainfield, IL, where he ran a cobbler shop for almost 50 years. On 27 Nov 1860, he married Mary Arter in Aurora, IL; 11 children were born to them, 8 of whom survived to adulthood (Daniel F., Jacob, Ellen McCarthy, Emma Hunter, Nettie Hunter, Elizabeth Nodruff, Jesse, & Merton). His brother Jacob Zimmerman came to the U.S. in 1866 and settled in Naperville, IL.
