He was described as tall, slender, gray eyes, brown hair, and a news reporter for Optic Publishing Company. He was recorded as having 2 years prior military experience as a Private in the New Mexico National Guard. For claim of exemption, he wrote "none whatever" (WWI Draft Card).
David served during World War I with the 356th Infantry Regiment, 89th Division (Rolling W Division). The 89th Division saw action in the St. Mihiel and Meuse Argonne Campaigns. The Division was inactivated in June 1919 at Camp Funston, Kansas.
