Memorial services for William Grady "Doc" Akins, 90, will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, in First United Methodist Church.
The Rev. Grayson Watson will officiate. Services are under direction of Hixson Funeral Home.
The body was cremated.
Mr. Akins died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 1991, in a local hospital.
A native of Trenton, Texas, he had lived in Lake Charles since 1934. He worked as store manager for Wilson Oil Field Supply Co. and upon retirement in 1967, he was division manager for Louisiana.
He was an avid golf player, playing on courses worldwide, including St. Andrews in Scotland and winning the Lake Charles Country Club golf championship in 1949. He attended Texas University on a baseball scholarship, where he was team captain. He later moved to Big Bring, Texas to play semi-pro baseball for six years. He also coached football, while teaching school in Rockwall, Texas.
He was past president and past board member of the Lake Charles Country Club; member of API, serving as treasurer for 12 years, and a member of First Methodist Church and the Builders Class.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Mary Happle Akins; one son, Dr. William "Bill" Akins of Minneapolis, Minn., and three grandchildren.
If they wish, friends may make memorial contributions to First Methodist Church, Cancer Society or Boy's Village, the family said.
