Joseph, a Civil War veteran, served in company K, 43rd Regiment, United Stated Colored Infantry (United States Colored Troops). Enlisted: May 25, 1864 in Pennsylvania. Promoted to Corporal: June 3, 1864. Mustered Out: Oct. 20, 1865. In the 1870 U.S. Census for Elyria he appeared as 30 years of age, working as a day laborer. His wife, Caroline, was 26 years old, born in Virginia. Joseph appeared in the 1890 U.S. Census of 1890, residing in Elyria, with asthma. Apparently Caroline is not buried in Ridgelawn Cemetery. Note tht although Joseph was shown as born in Jefferson County, Virginia, that country became part of West Virginia in 1863.
