Arline was born as the eldest daughter of Arthur & Maude Howe in Decatur, MI. She outlived all her brothers(5) & sisters(3).
Upon graduation from Decatur High School, where she was captain of the girls basketball team, Arline moved to Kalamazoo to obtain a secretarial education at Parsons Business School. She was employed at the Better Business Bureau of Kalamazoo.
During this period, she met her future husband (Garret VanHaaften)whom she married in 1933. They had two children (John Allen VanHaaften of Manistee, MI & Jean Edith VanHaaften-DiMarino of Prato, Italy).
Upon the birth of her first child, Arline quit work to become a full-time mother. As the children became older, Arline became active in the First Reformed Church as a Sunday school teacher and additionally the church sewing club. She also belonged to the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts and the Kalamazoo Book Club.
She took an interest in the Nursing School at Bronson Methodist Hospital & later joined the Red Cross Gray Ladies organization and helped out at the same hospital for over 35 years.
Arline was a valued member of the Howe Family where she was often asked to counsel siblings & nieces with family issues. She maintained the "Guest Book" at all Howe/Carpenter Family Reunions which is complete with pictures.
During her last years, she & sister-in-law Dorothy VanHaaften would get together often for a lunch or dinner "out on the town".
