Anchorage resident, Alta Merritt Norris, 98, died peacefully, July 2, 2010, in her sleep at Providence Extended Care.
Alta Florence Merritt, was born June 13, 1912, on a farm in Sampson County, North Carolina. She was the youngest daughter of Marion Stewart Merritt and Annie Ezzell Merritt.She moved to Washington DC, as a young woman and worked as a secretary.
She was married to Robert Wakefield Norris Jr. for more than 20 years. They moved to Oregon when Bob Norris was a captain in the 96th Army Division, stationed at Camp Adair. Afteer the War they settled in Salem, Oregon, and started Norris and Walker Chemical Co. Later this became Norris Paint Co. The family belonged to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Salem.
Alta loved the Oregon Coast, plants and music. She wrote in a letter:" Life is such a rich textured tapestry, delightful sensations, and rich rewards. Understanding, Patience, thank you Lord. Thanks for all the Peonies, Daffodils, even the mute little dandelion." She earned a bachelor's degree from Western Oregon University.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Bess Anne and Jeff Corwith of Anchorage; Son and partner, Don Norris and Sally Ross of San Francisco, and Son and daughter-in-law, Ned and Melinda Norris, of Glendale, California; She has eight grandchildren, Don's children, David Norris, of Silverton, Oregon, and Laura Norris-McCurry, of Corona, California; Jan's Children, Simon Norris, Charlotte Norris, and Sarah Norris, of British Columbia, Canada; and Bess Anne's children, Meghan Corwith, Kathryn Corwith, and Erin Corwith of Anchorage, Alaska. She has 5 great-grandchildren and on great-great-grandchild.
