November 27, 1893, at 7 o'clock am, Mr Henry Arms of Knoxville, Illinois, died at the residence of his son-in-law, Albert B Mann, near Toronto, Kas, in the 86th year of his age. Mr Arms came here September 2, last, hoping to recuperate his health, which had not been good for a year, but he soon realized that he was ill beyond recovery and that he had not long to live.

Henry Arms was a native of Conway, Franklin county, Massachusetts, where he was born January 29th, 1808. At the age of 17 he was apprenticed to the shoemaking and tanning trade, at which business he served an apprenticeship of four years, and then pursued journey work at Colerain, Mass, until 1831, when he went to North Carolina and engaged in peddling dry goods until 1839, when he removed to Knox county, Illinois, where he has since continued to reside. He held many offices of public trust - treasurer, sheriff, member of the legislature, and alderman and mayor of Knoxville - and was a public spirited citizen, highly respected by all the people among whom he lived. He was of an active but genial temperament, with good practical judgment, and a successful business man.

In June 1839, Mr Arms was united in marriage with Lucy Hamilton, of his native city of Conway, Mass. By this union there were three children - Spencer D, who died in infancy; Martha H, the wife of A B Mann of this city, and Henry W, who was killed by the explosion of a cannon November 16, 1886, at Knoxville, leaving a wife and three children. Mrs Mann is the only surviving child. Mrs Arms died September 14, 1884.

Mr Arms continued to reside at Knoxville, making his home with his daughter-in-law, but made frequent visits to his daughter here, and had many acquaintances among our people who held him in high esteem. He was formerly of the whig school of politics but became a republican at the organization of that party, the principles of which he strenuously adhered to up to the time of his death. He was a member of no religious denomination or secret society, but a liberal supporter of the church and temperance organizations.

The remains were taken to Knoxville, Ill, to be laid to rest in the family burial ground, and left on the early Kansas City train, Tuesday morning, accompanied by Mr and Mrs A B Mann.
