FORT WORTH - Sam Lloyd Hunnicutt, a retired Army colonel, died Thursday at his Fort Worth home after a long illness. He was 81.

Funeral will be at 4 p.m. Monday at Harveson & Cole Funeral Home. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park.

Col. Hunnicutt was born in Fort Worth and was a lifelong resident.He was a graduate of Central High School, now Paschal High School, and attended Texas A&M University and Texas Christian University.

Col. Hunnicutt was a member of the 112th Cavalry Regiment of the 56th Cavalry Brigade, a Texas National Guard unit called to active duty in 1940 and the last horse cavalry unit in the Army. He was with the unit on the Mexican border at the beginning of World War II and served in the South Pacific during World War II.

Col. Hunnicutt was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Military Order of the World Wars, and was an instructor, department director and then commandant of the U.S. Army Reserve School in Fort Worth from 1959 to 1967.

Survivors: Wife, Virginia Hunnicutt of Fort Worth; daughter, Gayle Hunnicutt Jenkins of London; brother, Jary Jack Hunnicutt of Green Valley, Ariz.; and two grandsons.
