Joseph A. Butler was born in Kentucky. He was the husband of Lucinda M. Kimble, the daughter of William Allen Kimble and his second wife Mary Ann Newman. The 1880 Census of Short Creek, Grayson County, Kentucky indicates Joseph A. Butler's father was born in Alabama and his mother was born in South Carolina. At that time Joseph's family consisted of: Himself, a farmer, age 45; his wife Lucinda M., a house keeper, age 38; and their children: John A., age 18; Henry E., age 16; Charles W., age 13; Isaac M., age 10; Hiram C., age 8; Mary A., age 5; and Laura A., age 1.
Joseph died between the 1880 census and before 1903. He was buried in an unmarked grave in the Kimble Cemetery near the Pilgrim Church in the Duff Community of Grayson County, Kentucky. His wife Lucinda was buried beside him. Lucinda was born on January 1, 1841 in Grayson County. She died there on March 16, 1918.
