Dr. Earl Gifford Alley, 75, passed away on May 26 at Oktibbeha County Hospital in Starkville. Born Dec. 10, 1935 in Corsica, S.D., he was a Starkville resident for 51 years. He was preceded in death by his father Enos Alley and mother Erlma Alley. He is survived by his wife Anna Bauer Alley of Starkville, daughter Kristen (Brent) Swain of Oxford, son Jeremy (Nathalie) Alley of Minneapolis, brother Gary Alley of Spokane, Wash., granddaughters Madeline Swain of Oxford and Chloe Alley of Minneapolis, a grandson due in June, and three nephews.
Dr. Alley was an emeritus chemistry professor at Mississippi State University. He served as the State Chemist for 11 years, as director of the Mississippi State Chemical Laboratory research division, and as a MSU chemistry professor for 31 years. He received the MSU Alumni Association's 1997 Faculty Service Award for his contributions to the improvement of Mississippi's quality of life, environment and economic development. Under his leadership, the MSU chemical laboratory gained a leading reputation for pesticide residue analyses and innovative fire ant bait development. He helped bring in more than $12 million in grants and contracts from the National Science Foundation, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, FDA, USDA and other agencies. He received bachelors and masters degrees in chemistry from MSU and Ph.D. in organic chemistry from University of Illinois. He served in the Air Force Reserve and Mississippi National Guard and was a Civitan. He and Ann coordinated the international March for Jesus in Starkville for six years. He served as an elder and founding member of New Horizons Christian Fellowship since 2005, member of the church's leadership design team, finance team leader, building program coordinator, and a strong supporter of foreign missions in Asia, Haiti and Honduras. One of his greatest loves was mentoring graduate students. His avocations also included tennis, lapidary, gardening, and performing music on string bass, guitar and other instruments.
Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 28 at Welch's Funeral Home in Starkville. The funeral will be Saturday, May 29 at 2 p.m. at New Horizons Christian Fellowship in Starkville, with burial in Memorial Garden Park. The Rev. Johnny Buckner and the Rev. Dr. Greg Jones will officiate.
