Jim was born May 28, 1919, in Ogden, IA, to Francis and Marie (Hager) Lawler. He grew up in Ogden and graduated from Ogden High School. He served as a medical tech in the US Army during WWII. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Ogden and farmed.
Jim married Jeanne Hanson in Vermillion, SD, on January 23, 1950. They farmed in the Ogden area until 1961 when they moved to Vermillion. Jim worked in the USD Postal Department until his retirement in 1984 after 22 years of service. They moved to Sturgis in 1989.
Jim enjoyed "coffeeing," playing cards, and camping. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Lawler, Sturgis; three sons, Michael (Kathy) Lawler, Elk Point, SD, Peter Lawler, Rapid City, SD, and Mark Lawler and his fiancé, Scarlet Ferrier, Rapid City; one daughter, Ann (John) Sweeney, Carroll, IA; one sister, Pauline (Robert) Uthe, Boone, IA; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two children, one brother, and two sisters.
Mass of Christian burial will be held in Ogden, IA.
