NEWTON FALLS — Betty Jane Hewitt, 85, Newton Falls, passed away at 1:44 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008 at the Hospice House in Poland following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
She was born Aug. 31, 1922, in Akron, the daughter of Emerson and Ethel Mae Ammon Hurd.
Betty married the love of her life, Herbert D. Hewitt, Sept. 12, 1947, and he survives. Betty and Herbert have lived together in Newton Falls since 1947. She was formerly of Warren.
She was a housewife and a freelance writer, composing stories for the Vindicator. One of her many joys were writing the Brown Bag Blessings column for the newspaper and Christian Devotionals, but her greatest joy was spending time with her beloved family.
Betty was a member of the Newton Falls Congregational Church for more than 60 years, was a 1941 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School, and enjoyed traveling, creating crafts and herb gardening.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Herbert D. Hewitt of Newton Falls; daughter, Janey and James Kerr of Canandaigua, N.Y.; two sons, James and Lucy Hewitt of Dallas, Texas, and Kenneth and Cindy Hewitt of Huntsville, Ala.; brother, Robert and Elaine Hurd of Cheyenne, Wyo.; and four grandchildren, Bradley J. Kerr of Portland, Ore., Meghan and Eric Beiler of Liberty, Pa., and Rachel E. Hewitt and Christopher P. Hewitt, both of Huntsville, Ala.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Genevieve R. Hurd; and a brother, Kenneth Hurd.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Newton Falls First Congregational Church. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the James Funeral Home in Newton Falls. The Rev. Ed. Carter will be officiating the services. Burial will be at Lutheran Cemetery in Newton Falls.
