Baldwin was appointed a Cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1822, and graduated 35th in the Class of 1826 as a Second Lieutenant in the Third Infantry Brigade. He served in garrison and on frontier duty in Missouri, Kansas, and Louisiana before being posted to Fort Towson, at the time in Indian Territory, where he died, apparently of non-combat causes, at age 31 (making the year of his birth 1803 or 1804).
