Mayor Freeman had retired from the Air Force Reserve in 1961 with the rank of major. He had entered the Army after World War I and served in Russia with the American Expeditionary Force sent at the request of President Alexander Kerensky. Recalled to active duty during World War II, he was transferred to the Air Force and was recalled, again during the Korean War. During his latter term of service he served in Japan as a pilot flying reconnaissance missions over Korea. An amateur boxer, he was service flyweight champion following World War I. He had been active in Republican politics and was serving his second term as mayor at the time of his death. He had served Mont Alto also as a member of the school board and as a member of the borough council.
He was a member of the Mont Alto EUB Church and had been a Sunday School superintendent, having taught in the Sunday School department for a number of years. He was a member of Acacia Lodge F and AM, the Harrisburg Consistory, Zenibo Temple Shrine, Waynesboro Shrine Club and the Mont Alto Fire Company.
He is survived by his widow, Hilda Kennedy Freeman; one daughter, Mrs. Charles H. Dunlap, Trumansburg, N.Y.,and three grandsons.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 3:30 p.m. in the Grove Funeral Home in charge of the Rev. Donald Burkhart. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Mont Alto. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
