Jerseyville

Former Alton resident, Dorothy Brokaw Tolley, 95, died at 3:10 a.m., Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at Jerseyville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born July 8, 1914, in Hamel Township, Madison County, one of five daughters born to the late John and Essie Gertrude (Brokaw) Barnett.
She graduated from Edwardsville High School, and married James Noble Tolley on May 30, 1934, in Alton. They resided in Alton for many years, and in her early married life she had been employed as a secretary at Sears-Roebuck and as a clerk at the U.S. Post Office both located in Downtown Alton. After the birth of her second child, Dorothy began staying at home and taking care of her family. She was a longtime member of the College Avenue Presbyterian Church in Alton, and in 1975, she and her husband relocated to Fayetteville, Arkansas. She became associated with the Home Extension and the Book Lovers Club in Springdale, Arkansaas, and also became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Springdale, until moving back to this area last year.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and John Rothe of Grafton; a daughter-in-law, Evelyn Brooks-Tolley of Fayetteville; and a dear friend, Alice Webb of Fayetteville; nine grandchildren, Denise Evans of St. Petersburg, Florida, Sandy Sanders of Peoria, Jay Evans of Bethalto, Grant Tolley of Fort Smith, Arkansas, Marshall Tolley, Elizabeth Brooks Tolley, McClure Brooks Tolley, Max Brooks Tolley, and Mason Brooks Tolley all of Fayetteville; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Tolley on December 5, 1985; a son, Jay Noble Tolley; and four sisters, Alma Niemeyer, Esther Ruoff, Marian Nave, and Elsie Farrow.
In accordance with her wishes, her body has been cremated.
Memorial services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 24, at the College Avenue Presbyterian Church in Alton.
Inurnment will take place immediately after the services at the Upper Alton Cemetery in Alton where she will be interred with her husband.
Memorials may be given to the Stephen Ministries associated with the First Presbyterian Church of Springdale, Arkansas, and may be mailed to the funeral home or envelopes will be provided at the memorial service.
Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville is in charge of arrangements.
