Thomas was a son of Cardington pioneer John Shunk and wife Rebecca.
After his marriage in 1857 to the Methodist pastor's daughter, they set up house in Cardington, where he was railroad agent.
Tom was a young man, father of two children and another on the way, when he enlisted duing the Civil War. He was commissioned First Lieutenant of Company C, 96th Reg Ohio Volunteer Infantry, on August 19, 1862. He led his company in the battle of Chickasaw Bayou. He fell ill during the Vicksburg campaign.
Lieutenant Shunk died on May 27, 1863 at Milliken's Bend, Louisiana in the lead up to the terrible battle there a week later. He was laid to rest at Cardington.
Some years later his widow married a comrade in arms, William Henry Sanderson.
