The son of Alexander & Lydia Akins, in 1860 he was a blacksmith living in Hopewell Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall and had black hair and dark eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted in Harrisburg July 2, 1861, and mustered into federal service there August 10 as a private with Co. G, 12th Pennsylvania Reserves (41st Pennsylvania Infantry). He deserted to date October 23, 1862, but returned to duty on December 31, 1862. Wounded in the head July 2, 1863, at Gettysburg, he was incapacitated for nine months but remained on the rolls and honorably discharged at term's end June 11, 1864. His name is spelled "Aiken" on the company register.
2. Enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster February 17, 1865, as a private with Co. F, 195th Pennsylvania Infantry, and is in the company register as "Aikins." He deserted again August 5, 1865, but the War Department removed the desertion charge in 1889 and accepted his desertion date as his date of honorable discharge.

He married Lucinda W. Keesey July 28, 1861, in Chanceford Township, York County, and fathered Levi (b. @1861), Theodore (b. 04/06/64), Alice M. (b. @1867), and Lydia Ann (b. 03/23/71 - married John M. Rexroth). In 1890, he lived in East Hopewell Township, York County.
