Phillip Smith was born in Wayne County, Ohio, April 29, 1831, and passed out of this life March 23, 1925. Had he lived until the 29th of April he would have been 94 years old.

He grew to manhood in Ohio on the farm that his father hewed out of the maiden forest.

When he was 26 years of age, in 1857, he was married to Ellen Smure, from this union four children were born, two sons and two daughters, one of the sons preceded him to the great beyond.

In his early life he confessed his faith in his Savior and affiliated himself with the Lutheran church and strove to live the better life as long as he lived.

He had been on the frontier all of his active life. Born on the frontier in the great Western Reserve in Northern Ohio, he went to Indiana when it was almost a wilderness, then to Michigan, from there to Iowa, thence to Oregon and to Kansas in 1878. Thus, his life was spent in blazing the trail for those that followed him and enjoyed the fruits that his sacrifice made possible.

He leaves his aged wife, three children, 21 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren, 68 in all, besides an invalid sister in Ohio and many other relatives and friends.

Memorial service was held March 24, at 2:30, in the Methodist Church, conducted by G.S. Smith, burial in the Delphos Cemetery.
