Husband of Leona Mae Albiker Atkinson, whom he married July 31, 1936 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Pulaski Street, Baltimore. They had one daughter. The Atkinsons lived for many years in SW Baltimore. In later years, they moved to Bel Air, Harford County, MD. John retired after working his entire life at Baltimore Gas & Electric. He died suddenly and unexpectedly of a brain aneursym while doing yard work and gardening. Shortly before his death, he attended the wedding of his oldest grandchild.
He was survived by his wife of over 50 years, a daughter and her husband, and three grandchildren.
