Theodora was born in 1875 in Los Angeles, California when the city was little more than a "cow town"; its growth was just getting underway with a new railroad link. Her mother Celedonia Baldonado was also born "in old California" sometime in 1862. He father, Gregorio Ortega was born in Mexico in 1846.

Theodora married Valentine Ortega (1874-1918) with whom she had several children. Sadly, Valentine was one of thousands in California who died in the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic (which killed millions worldwide). She later married Profirio Avalos, and lived for many years in Ventura County, California on a little ranch near the river bottom.

She is remembered for her making of tamales; for spending much time knitting and crocheting; and for applying discipline to children/grandchildren by means of an old leather harness. Her grandchildren would spend time with her, listening to the Lone Ranger and other radio shows, all the while busily sewing, or knitting while she rocked back and forth in her antique rocking chair. Theodora lived to 89 years of age.

"You rock, Theodora!" RIP
