"CARNEY, JOHN AVERY, 78, Graysville, Tenn., died Monday morning in Rhea County Hospital. Survivors, one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Smith, Hopkinsville, Ky.; one son, Clark Carney, Hixson, Tenn., five grandchildren; two brothers, Will Carney, Chattanooga; Mynatt Carney, Dayton, Tenn., several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Old Washington Baptist Church with the Rev. J.L. Gates and the Rev. J.E. Cunningham officiating. Interment in Rhea Memory Gardens. Sawyers, Dayton in charge."

John Avery Carney married Cora Lee Clarke on 17 December 1922. He attended Grandview Normal School near Grandview, Tennessee with desire to become a school teacher. But after he and Cora purchased a farm, he decided to make farming his occupation.
