No one ever called Mary by her first name, she was always "Grandma". She never said a negative word, she never swore, and she thought only the best about everyone. She was always so gentle and loving.

Mary Anne Cole was the first of seven children born to Peter and Elizabeth Smee in the tiny farming community of Bawnlea, Kilkooley, Tipperary Ireland. She was a long time member of the Norwalk Methodist Church in Norwalk, CT.

As a young woman she was a nanny until William P. Cole sent for her to become his second wife in the United States. William and Mary Anne were married the moment she reached New York City at St. Andrews Methodist Church on May 11, 1922.

She told wonderful stories about Ireland and she missed her home terribly. Very intelligent and interested in the world, Mary read the newspaper cover to cover every day. Her kitchen table was a gathering spot for the neighborhood ladies who were from England, Ireland, and Scotland....all happily knitting or sewing as they shared stories and the news.

Although Mary never had money or material possessions, she gave freely with her heart and sacrificed everything for her children and grandchildren.

Mary's heart was as big as Ireland. She always knew exactly what words would make you feel loved.

Remembered Joy (An Irish Prayer Loved By Grandma)
Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free!
I follow the plan God laid for me.
I saw His face, I heard His call,
I took His hand and left it all...
I could not stay another day,
To love, to laugh, to work or play;
Tasks left undone must stay that way.
And if my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss...
Ah yes, these things I, too, shall miss.
My life's been full, I've savoured much:
Good times, good friends, a loved-one's touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief—
Don't shorten yours with undue grief.
Be not burdened with tears of sorrow,
Enjoy the sunshine of the morrow.
