Adeline was the beloved daughter of William Washington Grubbs and Elizabeth Russell Grubbs. She was raised from the age of 10 by her Uncle Silas Grubbs and his wife Rachael Carlisle Grubbs. Beloved wife of William Henry Smith. Their children were John Thomas Smith, Mary Jane Smith and Sarah Elizabeth Smith. William and Adaline were the overseers at the Bell Plantation, located in Jones County near the Jarrell Plantation. (Bell Fence line is still on some large rocks joining the Jarrell Plantation.) This is where they were living when William joined the Confederate War on March 4, 1862, and was killed in 2nd Manassas, Va. August 29, 1862. Adeline was still living at the Bell Plantation alone with her three small children when Sherman's army set up camp in her front yard, and guards were placed around the house and warned that no one was to harm the family. Adeline married a second time in 1885 to John Edwards. They managed the "Poor Farm" in Jasper County, GA.
