US Marine Corps Lieutenant General. He graduated from St. John's College, Maryland in 1916 and began his military career with a commission as Second Lieutenant in the US Marines on February 5, 1917. During World War I he commanded the first US troops stationed at the US Navy station in St Thomas, Virgin Islands; in the postwar years he served in various staff positions in San Diego and Washington DC, and was commanding officer of the Legation Guard in Managua, Nicaragua. At the start of World War II, he was in command of the 10th Marine Regiment, when he was assigned General in command of the artillery V Amphibious Corps for the invasions of Guadalcanal, Tarawa and Saipan. In 1944, he trained the combined Army-Marine artillery units for the XXIV Army Corps, which resulted in the invasion and conquest of Leyte Island in the Philippines. Following the war, he commanded the 5th Marine Division in the occupation of Japan and was Deputy Commander and Inspector General of Fleet Marine Force Pacific. He retired from active service a Lieutenant General on November 1, 1946. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
