John E. Smathers, 91, former Ellensburg resident, died June 16, at Toppenish.
He was born Jan. 11, 1883, in Waynesville, No. Car. He came West with his father, R. H. Smather, in 1885, and settled in Goldendale. They moved to Ellensburg in the early 1900s, where his father ran the baggage and transfer business until his death in 1917.
John Smathers was a cement and brick mason, building many homes in Ellensburg, working with Ackly, Jake, Clemans, and Parish.
Preceding him in death, were his mother and four sisters in North Carolina, and two brothers in Washington, including Lee Smathers of Ellensburg.
He is survived by his wife, Emelia of Toppenish, one daughter, Mrs. George Minton of Arizona; six grandchildren, and sixteen great grandchildren.
Following cremation, remains were interred in IOOF Cemetery, in Ellensburg. [Ellensburg, Wash., Daily Record, Tues., June 25, 1974, page 10]
