Wilbur James Truby was born July 7, 1878, in Boone County, Missouri, the youngest of 11 children born to Franklin Truby and Rebecca Cooper. Wilber's siblings were: Mary, Celesta, Ustacy Cooper, Irben, Romeo C., Fannie E., Annie, Franklin M., Osie B., and Lillie.

Wilbur married Josephine Metsger, who was born November 7, 1883, in Illinois. Wilbur and Josephine had three children: Dorothy, Hermine, and Wilbur Joe.

Wilbur and his brother, Frank Truby, established Truby's Studio in Durant in 1913. Truby's Studio was located at 122 North Third Street and was one of Durant's pioneer businesses. The studio provided all services of photography. Wilber James Truby had learned his trade in St. Louis, Kansas, and Chicago, before settling in Durant as a premier photographer. Nearly every family who lived in Durant during the time that Truby's Studio was in business had photographs with the family Truby Studio trademark in the corner.

Wilber died June 7, 1964, in Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County) and was buried there in the Highland Cemetery. Josephine died on June 5, 1975 and was buried beside her husband.
