Francis and Karlina (note spellings) came to the U.S. about 1857 when their daughter Johanna (Anna) was between 2.5 and 4 years old. A younger brother, August, was born at sea and died shortly after birth. Five children died as infants. Son John died at 15 of typhoid fever. The family went directly to Chicago where relatives lived. Frank worked for a Mr Popp (or Papp) about 15 miles outside of Chicago (Elmhurst, IL). The family came to Pierce City when Johanna was about 14 years old (1874).
