Auto racer. A 2-time veteran of the Indianapolis 500, Smiley was killed when his car struck the third turn wall and disintegrated as he attempted to qualify for the 1982 500-mile classic. There would be no more fatalities at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway until driver Jovy Marcelo lost his life on May 15, 1992-exactly ten years after Smiley's accident.
