Birth: unknown
Death: Jun. 23, 2010
Helmand, Afghanistan

Colour Sergeant
1st Battalion (Cheshire)
The Mercian Regiment
British Army

He was deployed as part of a Police Advisory Team with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

CSgt Horton died alongside LCpl David Ramsden, Pte Douglas Halliday and Pte Alex Isaac in a night-time vehicle accident near Gereshk, Helmand province. Their Ridgeback armoured vehicle left the road and rolled into the Nahr-e Bughra canal as they were travelling to attend an incident at a nearby police check point. Army divers launched a rescue operation but they were unable to save their comrades trapped inside.

Aged 34, from Runcorn, Cheshire. CSgt Horton enlisted in 1992 and served in the United Kingdom, Cyprus, The Falkland Islands, Belize and Kenya, and on operations in Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan. Promoted to Colour Sergeant in June 2009 he assumed the role of Reconnaissance Platoon Second-in-Command. During preparations for this deployment, he was selected to command a team to train, advise and mentor the Afghan National Police in Gereshk. Colleagues remembered him as an extraordinary field soldier, with a huge amount of experience, who inspired all around him. Nicknamed "Bobby" after his father who also served with the regiment, he was a larger than life personality with a legendary sense of humour. Always involved in high jinx, he was the life and soul of the party.

CSgt Horton leaves behind his partner Gemma, son Ethan, stepdaughter Bethany, sister Caroline, other family and many friends. His sister said: "Martyn lived for three things - family, Army and Liverpool. He loved fighting for his friends and family. He was a loving dad, brother and son; he touched everyone he met. We will miss his cheeky grin. He will be fondly missed by everyone he knew and sadly died doing the job he loved. Once met, never forgotten."

Funeral with full military honours was held on July 14, 2010 at St Michaels Church, Greenway Road, Runcorn.
