He was born Dec. 13, 1914, at Tuckerman, the son of Ben and Viola Yates Gilbert. He married Miss Audrey Brand in April 1937.
Mr. Gilbert was a 1935 graduate of Tuckerman High School and a member of the Tuckerman Alumni Association. He played football and baseball for Tuckerman from 1932-1935, then coached the high school football team during the 1945 season. Mr. Gilbert was co-founder of the Tuckerman Little League Baseball Program through the Tuckerman American Legion in 1953.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II, and a charter member of American Legion 203, Earl Metheny Post. In March of 2000, he was awarded a certificate for 50 years of continuous membership and service to the American Legion. Mr. Gilbert served as post commander several times throughout his 50 years of service.
He retired from Revere Copper and Brass Corp. of Newport in 1977 and was a member of the Tuckerman Church of Christ, where he taught Bible classes.
Mr. Gilbert was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Audrey Brand Gilbert; parents; one sister, Leathel Henderson; and two brothers, Claude Wooten and Irvin Gilbert.
He is survived by one son, Morgan Gilbert of Tuckerman; one daughter, Jeanette Dickinson and husband Gerald of Paragould; two grandchildren, LeAnn Dickinson of Jonesboro and Bart Dickinson and wife Leslie of Little Rock; three great-grandchildren, Blake, Parker and Graham Dickinson of Little Rock; and a special family friend, Ann Meeks of Walnut Ridge.
Funeral services were held in Jackson's Newport Funeral Home Chapel with interment in Gracelawn Cemetery at Tuckerman.
Pallbearers were; Jim Fields, Todd Fortenberry, Michael Prysock, Jerry Bradley, Michael Holland and Jody Tapp.
