Born in Jasper County, Texas, her father died when she was 11 yrs old. Her mother couldn't afford to take care of all 7 children, so she and the older siblings were sent to live with friends and relatives in the area. Jean finished school and also worked as a nanny for her room and board. She married young as did all of her sisters. Her first husband was killed in WWII. He was in the Army Air Corp. She married William Johns, Jr in Oct 1950 in Orange, Texas. He was in the Navy and his ship was in dry dock in Orange. She followed him where ever he was transferred, raising two girls, Leslie Gene and Carole Lynn until they retired in Corpus Christi, Texas. She was a stay at home mom until after they moved to Corpus Christi, where she worked for Levi's, sewing jeans, and then worked as a cashier at the Navy Exchange. She developed cancer and lived 18 months, finally passing away in July of 1977 at Brook Army Medical Center Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. She was a favorite of her sisters because of her sweet, loving personality. Her family was always her priority, she loved to cook and bake and took great pride in preparing food for her family and friends. She was also an excellent seamstress, making all her children's clothes. She raised a beautiful vegetable garden every year and loved to plant flowers and work in her yard.
