From the Book Sheneman, Foust,Machling Bickel Genealogy by Allen Sheneman

"Records say that Frederick had received an excellent education and that he could speak seven languages. Different stories have been handed down from generation to generation as to why he came to the United States. It is said he had to flee for his life after spilling beans on the stairway at the school which tripped the professor causing him to fall down the stairs to his great discomfort. Others have said he ran away to escape the German Army. Family records show that Frederick came to the US October 6, 1773 not yet 15 years old and so far we have found no official immigration record possibly because he was so young. Apparently, he like many others changed the spelling of his last name when he
landed in the new country as all census and land records show that he went by the name Frederick Sheneman from that time on, however, there have been more variations such as Shanaman, Schuneman, etc. not to be confused with the spelling Shinneman as that is another branch so hereafter the immigrant Frederick will be referred to as Frederick Sheneman. Some of our family records say that he first lived in Lancaster County, Penn perhaps where he has Sheneman relatives who had preceded him to the U.S. Christoff Sheneman (Twin to Frederick's Father) an immigrant of September 30, 1743 listed in Strausbergers 30, 000 German Immigrants was living and owned land in Cocalico Township, Lancaster County. and may have been an uncle or other close relative and our Frederick Sheneman may have came and lived with him. Several things appear to be in favor of this belief such as family names in fact Frederick's named one of his sons. Christoff also we believe that one of old Christoff's sons whom I believe was Isaac Sheneman lived and owned much land in Quemahoning and Somerset Townships in Somerset County, Penn near where Frederick Sheneman and his family lived. They at the time spelled their last name the same however we find the children of Isaac Sheneman later preferred to use the spelling of Shinneman so when you find the later spelling of Shinneman you can be pretty sure they are descendents of Isaac. Frederick later went to Johnstown in then Bedford County where he worked as an assessor. He purchased three farms in the coal and iron fields which today are very valuable mines, however, he was said to have been a very kind and easy persuaded man and on this account he signed these mines to others, had it not been for this these mines would have passed on to the Shenemans. Frederick Sheneman and Anna Margaret Foust daughter of Nicholas and Catherine Mathes Foust was married April 12, 1785 he at the age 26 and she at the age 17. The marriage date is from family records no public record has yet been found but it may be found yet in some of Justice of the Peace Adam Miller's records or in the Berlin Lutheran Church records where the Nicholas Foust family attended or at the Lavansville Lutheran church where on volume of their early records are still missing.
Frederick died in Holmes County June 30, 1844 aged 85 yrs 7 mos and 13 ds and Margaret died 4 years later in 1848 both buried in the old graveyard at New Bedford. I
have been to the gravesite and the marked had been broken off near the base and I {Allen Sheneman}found the marker piled up in the corner of the cemetery with many others.
