Mildred and Lawrence adopted Delores Anne Johnson Schermerhorn (#33077014) at birth from her sister Frances Johnson Larrison (#119814545). Frances was pregnant and made the difficult decision to let Mildred adopt Delores as Mildred could not have children.
After Delores graduated from Newton High School and married, Lawrence and Mildred moved to Alden, Iowa.
They owned the High Life Cafe in Alden for many years. Lawrence ran the front and Mildred did all the cooking. The cafe was located on the banks of the Iowa River downtown. They lived in the apartment connected to the cafe.
Many happy summers were spent in Alden by the grandchildren fishing and throwing rocks at the ducks on the river.
Originally from Newton, Lawrence and Mildred owned a coffee shop on the square in Newton next to the Maytag Plant prior to moving to Alden. They also owned a filing station in Cherokee, Iowa in my mother's (Delores) early years.
Grandma died, surrounded by her family,in at the hospital in Story City, IA after having stroke at the Highlife Cafe in Alden, IA. Her daughter was on the phone with her as the stroke happened.
