New York, USA
|Death: ||Dec. 24, 1921|
John was born in Elmira, NY, the youngest child and only son of Anthony and Sarah Barrett. He and his family lived in Indiana in 1870 and moved to Columbus, Ohio between 1870 and 1879.
John married Mary Tarpey in St. Joseph Cathedral, Columbus, Ohio on 3 Jun 1886. John and Mary had at least 11 children who they raised in Columbus. Only 7 of the Barrett children survived to adulthood.
John was a cement contractor who poured cement for the sidewalk in front of Holy Family Church. He built his own home in Columbus on South Princeton Ave a couple of years before the March 23-27 1913 Ohio statewide flood. John and his family escaped the rising flood waters by climbing up to the attic. The home survived the flood. According to the 1920 Federal Census, John and Mary Barrett resided at the home with daughters Sarah, Nellie, Mary, and Julia. In 1930, Mary and daughter Nellie still lived in the home along with Mary's daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Leo Galow and their son, Leo. As of 2011, the home at 129 South Princeton Avenue was still standing.
John died at home from cancer on December 24, 1921. On his headstone, John's birth date reads "February 13, 1862". But on his death certificate, his estimated age is 56. John is listed as 5 years old on the 1870 census and 16 years old on the 1880 census which makes his estimated birth year either 1864 or 1865. However, his age is listed as 48 on the 1910 Census, and 52 on the 1920 Census which would make his estimated birth year 1862 and 1868. Until an actual birth record can be found, I am going to assume that John was born in 1865.
