Birth: Dec. 12, 1847
Georgia, USA
Death: Dec. 12, 1919
Macon County
Georgia, USA

Thomas J. Gatlin was a son of John William Gatlin (1815-1874) and Mary (Pritchard) Gatlin (1822-1893). His father was a carpenter prior to the War Between the States, supporting his wife and 8 children in Rodgers, Crawford County, Georgia. He enlisted in the Georgia Militia and fought with the Confederacy until the surrender in 1865. Upon his return, the family moved to Macon County, where they lived on a farm, raising their own food to eat and selling any surplus they might have for non food items. But the war had taken it's toll on his father, and he died in 1874. I was unable to find any census under his name for 1880. Thomas married late in life, in 1898, to Annie Horne (b.May 1869) who was much younger than he, by 18 years. Unto their union was born a daughter they named Annie Mae Gatlin, b.1903 in the Lower 14th District of Houston County, Georgia. At this time, Thomas was involved in farm management; later, in 1910, he had 30 employees on their farm. He died on Dec 19, 1919 at the age of 72 yrs. and was buried at Marshallville City Cemetery in Macon County, Georgia. What became of his beloved wife and daughter after his death is uncertain except that Annie died of a diabetic coma while living in Macon, Bibb County, GA on Aug 21, 1921 [514 Jackson St.], possibly while living with her daughter or another relative. J.C. Horne signed her death certificate; she was buried near her husband at Marshallville City Cemetery in Marshallville, Macon, Georgia.

Note: John William Gatlin was my paternal great, great grandfather. That would make Thomas my great, great, great uncle (?).

I'm grateful that I've been able to learn about my father's side of my family. It fills a void I always felt as a child and adult, an important part of my legacy. Rest Peacefully, dear Uncle.

Your father, one of my great-great grandfathers on the Webb side, fought for the CSA in Georgia. At least I have found you. God Speed. Rest In Peace.
