The Cookeville Press [Vol. X, No. 44, Page 5, Date: 19 Aug 1897] : An Interesting Citizen. There is quite an interesting character in the person of Esq. M. B. Gentry, of Avoton, this county. He was born Dec. 12, 1818, which makes him near 79 years of age. He is active and vigorous and in possession of all his faculties, with the exception that his sight is somewhat impaired by reason of an affectation of the lids. He is an expert printer and was the publisher of an important paper in Alabama during the race for the presidency between Gen. Jackson and White. He is a veteran of the Indian war of '36 and '40 and for valiant service in the campaign he is drawing a modest pension. In his young days he was a great admirer of race horses and was reputed to be one of the best trainers and jockeys in the South. Mr. Gentry is a loyal, uncompromising Democrat at the ratio of 16 to 1, and he does not arrive at his conclusions from what others say, as he has a splendid education and is a close observer. He is spending his declining years with his family on a comfortable farm, and is enjoying the fruits of a well spent life.

Company I, pg. 392 GENTRY, MARTIN B. Gentry was born on December 1818. He was the husband of Mary Peek. (Stray Leaves from Putnam County). Gentry enlisted on July 30, 1861 in Livingston. A. B. Hardcastle was his enlisting agent. Martin was sick during his stay at Camp Myers during the fall of 1861. Private Gentry was discharged on August 1, 1862 at Montgomery, Alabama for being too old according to the Conscript Law of 1862. Martin was described as a 43 year old mechanic who was born in Jackson County. He stood 5'5" tall and had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair. (Compiled Service Record); Gentry applied for a pension from Putnam County, #706. (Tennessee Confederate Soldier's pension #706); Martin claim he acquired sore eyes from the exposure up to the time of the fighting at Mill Springs. He was unable to do any outpost duty. Martin blamed the cold and continued exposure for his condition. Gentry's wife of 61 and a 7 year old grandchild lived with him in 1891. His wife's rental property was all the income of the Gentry family. Nathan Cox, R. H. Moody, and Thomas Clark were the witnesses used for Martin's pension application. The application was rejected (Tennessee Soldier's Pension #706); Gentry died on June 10, 1904. He is buried in the Dodson Branch Cemetery in Jackson County, TN.

From a family member.

I'm a descendant of Martin B. Gentry thru my grandmother, Lula Maxwell m. Luther Green Puckett. Her mother was Sarah Joanna Gentry, daughter of Martin B. Gentry and Polly Peek Gentry. My grandmother Lula was born about 1894 and was 9-10 yr.s old when he passed away.

I found your email address on the "find a grave site" and noticed that you gave Martin's middle name as Blackburn. When I was a child I had asked my grandmother about who her grandparents were were and she stated that his name was Martin "Bar-Jonah" Gentry. She told me that his name came from the Bible. Years later , when I began to do some family history research on the Gentry's, I discovered that Martin was descended from Joyners (the family name was continued with Martins father Joiner Gentry) and a Bartlett Gentry and I began to suspect that his name may have been Martin Bartlett Joyner Gentry and that my grandmothers child's ear heard it as Bar-Jonah. His name on the find a grave site was given as Martin Blackburn Gentry. I've checked the 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, and 1900 census records for him and all they gave was his middle initial, B.

Some 30 yrs ago I met another descendant of Martin by the name of Dessie Langford(now deceased). She had old letters written by Martin(maybe they were copies, I just don't remember now), even one from one of his sons to another in Texas in which he reported that "Pa is ded" along with some details of the burial, etc. Another reporting the death of I think it was Elias who was "killed by a saw log". She was kind enough to let me make copies. She also had some photos of Martin and Mary Polly Peek Gentry plus some of Polly's father James Peek.

Thanks,
