1814 record in Bedford County, VA.: Isham receiving a share of Joseph Carters' estate. (Bedford Co. VA Will Bk. 5, p. 23.)
The 1810 VA census shows a blank line for a first name of a MILES that turns out to be Isham although nearly unreadable on the microfilm. The family is still in existance with several small children still in the household: males 2 (0-10), 2 (10-16), 1 (16-26), 1 (45+)
female 1 (16-26), 1 (45+).
Isham and his wife are listed as being 45+ years of age.
One boy between 10 and 16 is probably Armistead who was born 1796.
Isham disappears from county records about 1814, the small children in that family must have been raised by some other relative.
Joseph was given all family possessions and land prior to Ishams' death making me think Isham was living with him at the time of his death about 1815 after John Carter left part of his estate to Isham for his infant children because Elizabeth must have already died.
Isham had 2 wives and property deeds carried the names of his wives. The first was Judith and she must have died before 1779.

Did you know that Isham Johnson Miles's 2nd wife, Elizabeth Carter, was the dau of Judith Chastain and Joseph Carter? Judith Chastain was the dau of Pierre Chastain, Jr. and Mildred Archer. He was the son of Dr.Pierre Chastain,Sr. a barber and a surgeon from France and his 2nd wife, Anne Soblet.
Dr. Pierre Chastain, Sr. immigrated from France to the VA colony on the James River. He was a Huguenot along with his family and friends. The house he built in the early 1700's is still standing today. If you go to
