Abner Pleasants Wilde was born at Oak Hill in Louisa County, Virginia. He and his brother, Garland Waddy Wilde, Senior, were raised by their maternal grandmother, Sophia Pleasants Waddy Wilde, as his mother was "delicate" and could not raise her children. His brother, who was younger, was unable to say "Abner" and instead called him "Tabb". That name stuck, and Abner Pleasants Wilde was always known as "Tabb".
He never married, spending most of his life in Virginia. He eventually took a position with the Panama Canal, which was then controlled by the US Government. Tabb Wilde died in the Canal Zone, but his body was returned to the US for burial in the Wilde Family Plot in Hollywood Cemetery. (Information provided in a family biography, written circa 1980 by Carolyn Heinrich Wilde Bache, Tabb's niece.)
