Robert Blakely was born to Mary Ann Sutcliffe Blakely on December 21, 1881. His father Robert Blakely Sr, died June 3, 1881 when crushed under coal in the pit he was mining in Farnworth England. His mother married a second time to Richard Bircher in 1886, who also became Robert's father.
Twice the family emigrated to America. The first time they returned to England so Mary Ann could recover from the loss of one of her young sons. Finally the family emigrated again, to Middletown, NY in 1896 through Ellis Island.
Robert married Olive Mae Thorpe in Middletown before moving to Schenectady. He worked on the local trains and trolleys. They had two children Beth and Ralph.
Olive Mae died in 1928 after a long illness. Robert later married Elisabeth Lang and was with her at the time of his death.
Until the time of his marriage, Robert went by the name Bircher. His half sibblings were surprized to learn that he was not a full brother. He was encouraged to honor his dead father by using his name as an adult.
