Erick was born and raised in Sweden and adopted the surname Hult (anglicized as Holt) when he was in the Swedish military. His family name was Olofson or Norberg. (Holt means wood or forest.) He and Brita had 13 children, the two oldest being born in Sweden. He was a farmer and grain elevator operator.

They emigrated to the US in 1868, first settling in Henry County, Illinois. About 1878 they came to Kansas, first settling in McPherson County. They moved to 80 acres northwest of Burdick in Morris County in about 1884, staying in that area until they retired to McPherson in 1910.

Karin died in Illinois. Sadie died near Burdick Kansas as an infant.
