St. Albans Messenger

Leona H. (Bean) Hakey, 83, of Swanton, died peacefully Tuesday, June 15, 2010, at the Franklin County Rehab in St. Albans (after a brief illness), with her loving family by her side.

Born on Aug. 29, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Bertha (Lacoste) Bean.

On Nov. 1, 1945, she married Leo Edward Hakey, who survives her.

Leona worked for Fonda Container Corporation from Aug. 16, 1953, until her retirement in August, 1988. She was a dedicated and avid bingo player where she enjoyed the company of friends as much as winning of the game. She loved to watch World Wrestling Enterprise matches on television and would stay up late nights to see a fight. She will be fondly remembered for her generous and caring ways, for her love of all of her "babies" even when they grew up and for being a dedicated mother and wife.

In addition to her husband of 64 years, she is survived by her daughter, Sandra L. Larivee and her husband, Ronald, of Enosburg Falls; two sons, Raymond L. Hakey Sr. and his wife, Jeanne, of Tucson, Ariz., son, Gary G. Hakey and his wife, Linda, of Sahuarita, Ariz.; her grandchildren: Tamara Gagne and husband, David, of St. Albans, James Larivee and wife, Jeannette, of Enosburgh, Shawn Larivee and wife, Amy, of Enosburgh, Parmallee Chaffee and husband, Justin, of Highgate, Raymond Hakey Jr. and wife, Jennifer, of North Carolina, Michael Hakey and wife, Natalie, of Arizona, Jason Hakey and wife, Penny, of Swanton, Chad Larivee and wife, Heather, from Highgate, Todd Larivee from Enosburgh; 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, who was able to bring her much pleasure over the last year; her sisters, Lorraine Corbiere and husband, Merle, and Helen Bouchard; brother, Donald Bean; sister-in-law, Gladys Cross; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Leona was preceded by her sister, Doris Beaulieu; and brothers-in-law, J. Roland Bouchard and Ectus Cross.

A celebration of Leona's life will be hosted by Kidder Memorial Home, located at 89 Grand Ave., Swanton (868-3331), on Saturday, June 19th, at 11 a.m. Father Thomas D. Nadeau will officiate. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at the Hakey family lot in Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. and again on Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until the hour of the funeral.
