Johnny Vajgrt, 75, of Marshalltown, died Nov. 4, 2008, at Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Johnny was born on May 17, 1933, in Liberty Township, Marshall County, the son of Ben and Blanch (Raman) Vajgrt. Johnny attended school in State Center and Conrad, and graduated with the Conrad High School Class of 1951. He served in the United States Navy from 1952 to 1956. Johnny married Gloria Swanson and they later divorced. He later married Carolann Ballenger, and they have been together for 39 years.
Johnny worked on a milk route for Bordens, worked at Arbie Feed, and was self-employed doing backhoe and tiling work. He was also a landowner and farmer. He owned the Ankeny Rental Center for 15 years before selling it in 2004 and returning to Marshalltown to retire.
He enjoyed working, fishing and camping.
Johnny is survived by his companion, Carolann Ballenger of Marshalltown; his children, Duane Vajgrt of Laguna Beach, Calif., Darwin Vajgrt of California, Dee Vajgrt of Quincy, Calif. and Debra Vajgrt of Phoenix, Ariz.; his six grandchildren; his sister, Irene Ballard of Conrad; his brother, James (Jackie) Vajgrt of Marshalltown and Florida; and many nieces and nephews.
Johnny was preceded in death by his constant companion, his dog Muffin; his brothers: Amil, Andy, Benny, Albert, Chuck, Harold and Martin Vajgrt; his sisters, Sophia Shipley, Blanche Wandell, Mary Determan, Helen Slinker and Elsie Vajgrt (in infancy).
