A three-time gold medalist, he achieved first place finishes in the 200-meter and 400-meter individual medleys, and 4x100-meter medley relay events in Mexico City during the 1968 Summer Olympic Games. In addition, he was awarded a silver medal in the 100-meter backstroke competition. Born Charles Buchanan Hickcox, he received a scholarship to attend Indiana University, and under the guidance of Hall of Fame coach James "Doc" Counsilman, earned multiple National AAU Championships and NCAA Titles. He was named 1968 "World Swimmer of the Year". Following his Olympic career, he worked as a swim coach and served as a TV analyst. He was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1976, and was named to the Indiana University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1982. He died from cancer.
