Sam's folks came from Tennessee, but Sam migrated to North Carolina where he worked in the then-booming furniture business (Drexel Heritage) until retirement. He was a talented craftsman, very good at his work. He was a member if the First Methodist Church of Morganton where he also served as a Sunday School teacher.
He was a Shriner, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, and a member of Morganton Masonic Lodge No. 217.
He married Eddie Lois Houck, and they had one son, Sammy.
Sam worked hard all his life, but still had time to plant a garden and put up gourds for the purple martins that returned to his yard every year around income tax day.
In addition to his parents, Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Eddie Lois Houck Depew; stepson Richard Jennings Hyatt; brothers Herman Depew, Lee Depew, and Jay Depew; and a sister, Emma Headrick.
He was survived by his son W. Sam Depew; sisters Helen Haynes of Alabama; Gladys Depew of Tennessee; and by grandchildren Clay and Diana Depew.
The graveside service was conducted by the Rev. Robert Roach and the Rev. Mike Hattan. Masonic rites were given by the Rev. Ed Lawing.
Kirksey Funeral Home assisted the family.
